Sunday, December 6th. Tonga Hut‘s annual Tiki Christmas show turns 10! Time for holiday cheer with lots of great holiday tiki wares, tiki music and tiki drinks! This is the wildest Wonderland yet, with a Krampus themed art show, and The High Tides to providing musical entertainment! Vending starts at 2pm, and will go on into the evening, as we light up the lot for after-dark vending hours!

Experience yesterday’s future today at the world’s largest tiki event, Tiki Oasis! Thursday, August 13 through Sunday, August 15. I’ve got some new ceramics, revisiting some plush tiki designs, and a whole bunch of new prints! I’ll have a piece in the Art show, and I’ll also be teaching a class on paper sculpture!
Atomic Tiki Terrors! at Creature Features Gallery, Burbank CA. 07.19.15 – 08.09.15
Mid-century America, at the dawn of the Atomic Age… to dodge the concept of nuclear annihilation, kids thrilled to Monster movie matinees and collected Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, where mutants, giant bugs, and space invaders all tempered (and fed on) the fear of atomic armageddon. Adults escaped into an exotic, make-believe world of tiki bars and backyard luaus, where Polynesian trappings and rum-based cocktails took them away from their urban surroundings and allowed them to forget their radioactive reality.
Atomic Tiki Terrors! at Creature Features Gallery pays tribute to this fascinating era of fads and crazes, of tikis and terrors with artwork from over 50 artists in the fields of film & TV, fine art, comics, make-up & visual FX, children’s book illustration and more! The show will also feature a Tiki Trading Post vending area in the lot behind the gallery, live music by the Jimmy Psycho Experiment, cocktails courtesy of Tonga Hut.
The opening reception for the show is Sunday, July 19th, from noon until 5pm. The show will be on exhibit until August 9th, during regular business hours. Exhibiting artists include: Atomikitty, Christine Benjamin, BigToe, Eric Diaz, El Gato Gomez, Gris Grimley, Michael Flemming, Dawn Frasier, Jake Geiger, Mary J. Tonga Hut Big Bastard Bacchanal Art Show and Parking Lot Sale 06.07.15
Sunday, June 7th. Tonga Hut celebrates everybody’s favorite drooling tiki fountain! The fun kicks off at 2pm with Parking Lot Sale and Art Show. The theme for the Art Show is the Drooling Bastard. Artists will be competing for the title of “Bastard in Show”! At 4pm, members of the Loyal Order Of The Drooling Bastard (LOTDB), are encouraged to gather for the largest LOTDB group photo ever attempted! (We’re hoping to get a head count for the photo, so please reply here if you can swing it!) DJ Tonga Tom will be spinning tunes. Durango’s Tacos will provide the eats. Vending/Art Show until dusk, and then the festivities move inside at 6pm for a delirious Dance Party with DJ Lee!
Tiki Toons: Gallery Show at Van Eaton Galleries, Sherman Oaks CA 05.23.15 – 07.13.15
Van Eaton Galleries presents Tiki Toons! Over 80 artists, animators and designers have created a painting, drawing or sculpture that features a character or characters from an animated feature film, short film, TV series or commercial, and is “Tiki Themed” in some way. The opening reception is Saturday, May 23rd, 6pm to 10pm. The show runs through Saturday June 13th. Mai Tais will be served at the opening reception! Contributing artists include BigToe, Gris Grimly, Ken Morgan, Mark Tavares, Stephen Sandoval, Suzannah Mosher and more!

Tonga Hut Palm Springs wins a new category, “Best Small Rig”, in the Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade! Our volunteer handy work really paid off! I redesigned the float, and helped guide the work parties as we completed our mission and added new elements! You can see photos of the float on the thread on Tiki Central.

Iron Giant Gallery Show at Creature Features, Burbank CA 11.08.14. – 11.23.14
In the summer of 1999, Director Brad Bird and a ragtag band of 2D animators from Warner Bros. lovingly introduced to the world the Cold War tale of a boy and his robot. On November 8th, Creature Features pays tribute to this heartwarming tale with an unprecedented group art gallery exhibit showcasing artists in the fields of film, television, fine art, comics, and more, all paying homage to this endearing metal man. The opening reception is on Saturday, November 8 from 4pm – 9pm. The show will be open during regular store hours through Sunday, November 23rd. Author Sven Kirsten will be signing his latest tome, TIki Pop from 2-6pm. Tikiyaki 5-0 will provide musical entertainment starting at 7pm! Vending and art show from 2 til dusk. Egyptian Theatre 10th Annual Tiki Night: “Plastic Paradise: A Swingin’ Trip Through America’s Polynesian Obsession” 06.28.14
King Kukulele & The Friki Tikis and the Polynesian Paradise Dancers will perform in the Egyptian Theatre Courtyard alongside vendors and a no-host bar. Author Luis I. Reyes will sign copies of The Hawaii Movie and Television Book, for sale by Larry Edmunds Bookshop.

Saturday, June 1st, at the historic Egyptian Theatre at 6712 Hollywood Blvd. Lots of fun on hand, King Kukulele performs, along with the Polynesian Paradise Dancers. I’ll be vending, stop by and say aloha! A slide show and a 50th Anniversary tribute to the Enchanted Tiki Room by Bob Baker’s Marionettes will precede a screening of the 1954 film noir HELL’S HALF ACRE, filmed in Honolulu.

Friday, May 17th through Sunday, May 19th. Tiki Caliente V is an intimate weekend of tiki fun in Palm Springs. Visions Of Oz, Heritage Square Museum, Los Angeles, 03.03.13 – 03.31.13
Heritage Square Museum, in conjunction with Creature Features, will pay tribute to this enduring universe with VISIONS OF OZ – A CELEBRATION OF ART FROM OVER THE RAINBOW, a multi-media exhibit showcasing over 100 works of art from a diverse group of artists including Rick Baker, Drew Struzan and Dave Dorman. This unprecedented month-long event will feature work in a wide range of media including illustrations, paintings, sculptures, and full-sized recreations of some of your favorite characters from the beloved 1939 MGM musical starring Judy Garland. The event will also showcase a dazzling display of historical memorabilia, including rare editions of the original Baum books, props, concepts and artwork from various Oz-themed film & TV projects, and many more surprises.
Beginning Sunday, March 3 the exhibit will be on view during museum operating hours (Friday, Saturday and Sunday only) in the Perry Mansion gallery and is free for museum members and visitors taking the museum guided tour. This year’s exhibit opens on Saturday, October 13th at the art gallery inside of the Mountain View Mausoleum, 2300 N. Marengo Avenue in Altadena, CA 91001 and showcases the following prestigious group of artists from the worlds of fine art, comics, film, TV and animation, including Gino Acevedo, Stephen Chiodo, Ricardo Delgado, Rick Heinrichs, Eric Pigors, Amber Skowronski, Mike Sosnowski, William Stout and more!

A day stuffed to overflowing with more than 10 bands, (including the Hula Girls, the Tequila Worms and Jason Lee and the R.I.P.tides), a car, motorcycle and bike show, an art show (high, low and inbetween!), and vending! I’ll be vending from 11am to 7pm, with lots on new items!

Monsters on Bikes, the brainchild of Monster Kat and Paul Nagle is reincarnated for this monstrous exhibit at Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago, Il. Now extended through Halloween! The world’s largest tiki event, Tiki Oasis, celebrates the South of the Border influence on Exotica and other Mid-Century touchstones for Tiki Culture Thursday, August 18 through Sunday, August 22. I’ll be debuting some new pieces, including my most ambitious ceramic work to date!

Saturday, July 16th. American Cinematheque’s annual Luau Nights screens Bird of Paradise, at the historic Egyptian Theatre at 6712 Hollywood Blvd. Lots of fun on hand, King Kukulele performs, along with the Polynesian Paradise Dancers. I’ll be vending, along with tiki tOny, Big Mike and more! Film screens at 7:30.

Saturday, July 9th. Tonga Hut in North Hollywood hosts an art show celebrating everybody’s favorite giant stone heads! I’ll be debuting some brand new ceramic bowls! Tiki music provided by DJ Marty Lush and tiki drinks by Kelly “Hiphipahula” Reilly! Doors open at 4pm. Then, the show goes on line on Tiki Central on July 11th.
